Mistakes happen, and things don't go as planned in the dynamic world of renovations - every home is different - but I always say, it is how a person reacts and rectifies their mistake or deals with a problem that removes them from our hall of fame.

Grout Expectations

"The other job I hired someone to do was the floor tiling. As we were turning it into a wetroom, I wasn't confident at the time on creating the angle for the water to drain correctly. I have to say, the pattern and initial instal was beautiful and good work, however... despite knowing that this was clearly going to be a wetroom, he used normal grout on the floor, which started to wash away after a month or so, water started coming through the light fitting in the dining room when we showered.

The Boiler Man Who Planned My Future

"When I was seventeen, my mum asked me to deal with the boiler repair man while she was out. He came over, I took him to the boiler and did the standard thing of asking if he wanted a cuppa. He asked for tea, I made it and when I handed it to him he said, "You'll make a good wife someday."

Drill the Hole, Not My Patience

"I renovated my own bathroom, but there were two jobs I didn't have the tools or expertise to do myself. One of them was drilling a hole into the wall for the drain pipe to go from above the floor to under it. To hire the tool was the same price as getting someone in to do the work. While here, the guy was looking around, canvassing for other work - not too bothered about that, people have to make a living - but he was really pushy on fitting an extractor fan. I politely said not yet as we weren't yet sure if we were going to cover all the walls in panels and a fan is easy enough to retro-fit.
